Other Works

My Opus 1 is Twenty Studies in 6/8 Time and is published by Plucked String Editions. Standard notation only.

Opus 2, Bluegrass Mandolin Compositions Volume One, was self-published in October 1985 and a second run came out in 1986. I have a very few (of the latter) left, which I will sell for $12.00 each, as there was an unavoidable problem with the graphic reproduction on the second run and the staff lines are somewhat too prominent, making the book a little difficult to read - it is, however, readable. Standard notation only. I plan to republish Opus 2 reset in Finale at my earliest opportunity. The contents:

Stutzman’s Rag, Lou Martin’s Hornpipe, Maritime Brilliancy, Mom’s Waltz, Grisman Stomp, Sunset March, Night Arrow, Pipe of Peace, Apache Blues, Blue Waltz, Lonesome Pine Waltz, Goodman Street, Deer Spring, Arizona, Dede of the Lowlands, Onondaga Ramble, Yukon Gold, Noah’s Ark, Sky Bells, The Death of Joe Val.

Opus 4 will be 50 hornpipes of my own composition, self-published, and should be released by the end of 2007. Standard notation only. Some of the titles:

Stagecoach Hornpipe, The Barn Hornpipe, Doyle Lawson’s Hornpipe, The Hornpipe March, The Cat, Leipzig Hornpipe, Charlie Monroe’s Hornpipe, Sowbelly Hornpipe, President H.W. Bush’s Hornpipe, Joni Mitchell, Portland Maine Hornpipe, Tibetan Hornpipe, The Lobster, The Sheriff of Nottingham, Crail Hornpipe, Dorset Hornpipe, Mechanical Hornpipe, Possum Hornpipe, Australian Hornpipe

Next will be Opus 2, Bluegrass Mandolin Compositions Volume Two, self-published, and will include many of the tunes from my Rounder album Recent Work (Rou 0214). Standard notation only. A partial list of titles:

Down City Part One, Tucson Reel, Monroe Rambles On, For Russell, Andromeda Waltz, Down City Part Two, Midnight Blues, Melissa’s Polka, Maud Lewis, Top Tension, Grandma Moses, French Blues, Curly Ray, Christmas Tree March, American Design, Bluebird, Nantucket Blues, Signal Monroe, Silver Maple, Pomona #2, Moose Hat, Sea Hoss (Stelling Reel) [this one was intended for Rounder 0214, but did not make it to the recording]

There is also another, more curious manuscript half way to completion. Because mandolinists who are good sight-readers want solid classical music for practice, and want something to use every day, I am in the process of rewriting the Two Part Inventions of J.S. Bach BWV 772-786 for solo mandolin. The result will be approximately 65% Bach, 35% Martin, and will be self-published, probably as Opus 6. This book will be a natural stepping stone to Six Sonatas and Partitas for Violin without Bass BWV 1001-1006.
